Day 67 – 356 Days of Trout

Day 67 - The Couple

There is no finer example of a pair of mating brook trout than this couple.

He waits behind her while she lays her eggs. His back is humped, his mouth is a little more toothy than usual, his jaw is slightly protruded, and his lower fins and body are brightly colored for the spawn.

She wears spawning colors, too, although not as bright. She positions herself close to the gravel and releases her eggs.
